Joseph Boydell

For heroic achievement in connection with operations against insurgent communist forces in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a corpsman with Company M, 3^rd Battalion, 5^th Marines, 1^st Marine Division.  On the afternoon of 27 August 1970, HM3 Joseph Boydell was a member of Company M patrolling just north of Liberty Bridge in Quang Nam Province, Republic of Vietnam.  When his platoon unknowingly entered an enemy minefield, the point marine stepped on a hidden mine.  The resulting explosion critically wounded the point marine and seriously wounded several other marines.  When the senior platoon corpsman was killed while attempting to reach the point marine, HM3 Boydell completely disregarded his own safety and maneuvered through the minefield to the wounded marines and administered aid to all the wounded marines thereby saving several lives.  HM3 Boydell’s outstanding professional skill, fortitude in the face of enemy fire, and sincere concern for the welfare of the marines in his platoon inspired all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
