MacLennan wrote primarily of Canadian themes & was credited with being the first writer to establish a national literary identity for Canada. Works like Barometer Rising, 1941 & Two Solitudes, 1945 established his credentials as one of Canada's greatest novelists. He also published several collections of essays & has himself been the subject of academic study. The National Film Board
(NFB) of Canada paid tribute to MacLennan by dramatizing his life and work. In portraying Canada's national character in fiction, the Nova Scotia-born novelist & essayist assured other younger writers that their country was worth writing about. He won the Governor General’s Award five times.

eyes a lake you see rocks on its bottom;
voice a loop
with music in what it said
that tangled inside your head.
"Callum" was his name,
pronounced as if he’d sign it on the sun;
from "the island" he came . . .
don’t know which one.
' Callum'
first appeared in the Marxist 'Canadian Tribune', April 22nd, 1957. It was
Acorn's 6th & His final poetic contribution to the paper. He told
Purdy that 'Callum' was among his three or four best poems..

Acorn,

blue card covers printed in red & black in dustwrapper. Thin 8vo., 54
pp. 1 of 200 copies printed [of 250] in fine fresh condition.
Extraordinary Inscribed Copy. On the half title the author has written:
"A poem is something / you call a poem / P-O-E-M / or P-O-M-E /
and works / Milton Acorn / in loving appreciation / of / Joe Rosenblatt /
Joe Irving / Red Lane / and Lionel Kearns (MA)". A penciled price
of 16/- on the half title, suggesting that Lionel Kearns bought this copy
in England. The inscription probably dates from the mid-60's while Acorn
was living in Vancouver. He used to hang out in a coffee house named The
Advance Mattress Company, and was involved politically, most curiously
with the LISA [League for Socialist Action], a Trotskyist formation. Joe
Irving was a poet in resident at the LSA offices on Granville Street, and
a singer of folk songs as well. An important association copy. [29703]

John
[Edward] Buell / One of Canada's most private authors, is a full time
professor at Concordia University in Montreal. As a part time novelist, he has
written four novels in seventeen years that have gained respect of reviewers at
home and abroad. Yet he remains an obscure writer. But his lack of celebrity is
by design, for Buell has shunned the literary limelight in favor of the
university life, which has allowed him the quiet and security to write.
The PYX and Four Days brought the author to the attention of American critic
Edmund Wilson, who in his 1964 book O Canada observed: "One of the most
interesting of the young Canadian novelists is John Buell of Montreal."
Comparing the two books, Wilson noted: "Four Days , though we are still in
the underworld, is an effort on a higher level, a narrative equally full of
suspense that is also a psychological study." - Dictionary of Literary
Biography

Galleys for Favourite Game

[Cohen, Leonard]. VOX DUCUM 1951.
Montreal: Westmount High School, 1951. Small 4to., decorated wrappers, 106
pp. Cohen's Graduating Class Annual. In fine condition. A fascinating
publication with several photos & biographical entries showing early
indications of Cohen's "Sense of Self"; a heightened personal
awareness that would ultimately lead to the publication of his first book during
his McGill days in 1956, "Let Us Compare Mythologies". Entries &
Photos include: Page 20: Biographies, Staff: Len Cohen. Page 23: Graduating
photo of the young poet with his personal bio copy including: PASTIME,
"Leading sing-songs at intermission" & AMBITION, "World
Famous Orator" [very intuitive & prescient]. At Westmount High,
Cohen was President of The Student's Council & a Science Graduate. The
Council photo is on page37. School Theatrical Production entries are on page 40
& show "Len" Cohen in the cast "Comes The Revolution" - as
Julius Caesar in "Death of Julius Caesar" & as the producer for
"God Save The King". Page 41 shows the photo of the Glee Club with a
caption on page 42. Page 47 shows Cohen as Chairman of the Students Production
Committee for "You Can't Take It With You". Page 49 lists Len
Cohen as Ticket Sales Manager for the play. Page 54 shows a photo of Leonard Cohen.
Likely the first time Cohen appears in print in any form, Less than 200 copies
originally printed. Save for a very few, all were likely discarded over time.

THE DEDICATION COPY OF THE FIRST STUDY OF CANADIAN-LITERATURE FROM A MODERNIST POINT OF
VIEW
 |
Collin apparently titled the collection The White Savannahs because he was living in London Ontario at the time, which he felt was so devoid of culture it was much like living in a desert. [William Edwin Collin, literary critic (b at
Oakenshaw, Eng 9 May 1893; d at London, Ont. 21 Dec 1984). The White Savannahs, a modernist study of 9 Canadian poets, established him as a major Canadian critic. Collin applied the ideas of such writers as
T. S. Eliot, Sir James Frazer & the French Symbolists to Canadian poetry. A fine prose stylist, he also wrote a study of Paul-Jean Toulet and many articles and reviews, including from 1941 to 1956 the yearly review of French Canadian literature for the University of Toronto Quarterly - The Canadian Encyclopedia]. "In 1982 critic, W. E. Collin recalled the excitement with which he discovered the poems of Leo [Kennedy] in a copy of the FORUM in 1930, and the urgency that sent him hurrying to Montreal to meet with the poet and his colleagues. The FORUM's editor had supplied him with addresses. Collin was struck by the proximity of the poets who were turning the desert imagery of
T. S. Eliot to their own uses: "I exclaimed, 'They all live in Montreal, Kennedy, Smith, Scott, Klein, They all live in Montreal.'" Collin would eventually celebrate the group in his critical anthology THE WHITE SAVANNAHS [1936]." - AS THOUGH LIFE MATTERED, by Patricia A. Morley, 1994.

Canadian novelist, playwright, critic, journalist, & professor.
One of Canada's best-known & most highly regarded authors
internationally, & one of its most distinguished "men of
letters", a term Davies is variously said to have gladly accepted
for himself & to have detested. Robertson Davies won the Dominion
Drama Festival Award for best Canadian play in 1948 for Eros at
Breakfast, received the Stephen Leacock Medal for humour in 1955 for
Leaven of Malice, the Lorne Pierce Medal in 1961, the
Governor-General's Literary Award in the English language fiction
category in 1972 for The Manticore, as well as 23 honorary degrees.
Davies was the founding Master of Massey College & the first
holder of the Massey Chair position at the University of Toronto in
1961. He co-founded the U of T's graduate center for the Study of
Drama in 1966, was Short-listed for the Booker Prize for Fiction in

Davies, W. Robertson.
SHAKESPEARE'S BOY ACTORS. London: J. M. Dent & Sons, 1939. First edition of the author's rare first
book. 8vo., pp. vii, 207, [1] [Bibliography]. Publisher's [electric] blue cloth covered boards, clean blue topstain, gilt-lettered at the spine with the blind-embossed crest on the front cover. Eight black & white plates. A very nice, near fine or better copy, in a very good or better copy of the rare [pc] illustrated white dustwrapper showing minimal use; 1 tear neatly mended on the verso of the back panel. An excellent, bright, unfaded example of this Davies
high Spot & in definite collector's condition. Davies account of the life & training of the Elizabethan boy actors, a consideration of their particular abilities & shortcomings, & discussion of the extent to which these actors set free or hampered Shakespeare in his female
characterizations. Very scarce indeed. Most of the edition was pulped to accommodate the paper shortage of the war years. Perhaps a few hundred copies were actually sold which accounts for its infrequent appearance on the market. In the last twenty-five years, less than a dozen copies have surfaced in varying states of perfection or lack thereof, usually without dustwrapper, in both the Toronto & Montreal markets.

Timothy
Findley - Four Family Copies
Timothy Irving Frederick Findley born in Toronto, Ontario, on
October 30, 1930, published his first short story, "About
Effie," in The Tamarack Review in 1956 (reprinted in Dinner Along
the Amazon [1984]), and considered a career in writing with the
encouragement of his friends Ruth Gordon and Thornton Wilder. For a
time he made his living writing for radio, television and the stage.
He wrote for the CBC television adaptation of Mazo de la Roche's The
Whiteoaks of Jalna (1971-72) and for Pierre Berton's The National
Dream (1974), the latter for which he won a 1975 ACTRA award for
scriptwriting with his partner William Whitehead. In 1974 he became
the first playwright in residence at the National Arts Centre in
Ottawa. His first two novels--The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and
The Butterfly Plague (1969)--were published outside of Canada; his
third novel, The Wars (1977), won the 1977 Governor General's Literary
Award for Fiction.
He published eight more novels, three short-story collections, and two
memoirs (not including the posthumous Journeyman [2003]), in addition
to numerous pieces in periodicals. Active in the Canadian writing
community--he helped found the Writers' Union of Canada in 1973 and
served as its chair from 1977 to 1978. He was president of the
English-Canadian chapter of P.E.N. International (1986-87), and in
2002 the Writer's Trust of Canada named an award after him (for male
fiction writers in mid-career). He lived for over 30 years at his
cottage, Stone Orchard, near Cannington, Ontario, but in the mid-1990s
moved to Stratford, Ontario, and divided his time between there and
France. He died in Provence, of complications from a hip fracture, on
June 20, 2002.
In addition to the ACTRA for The National Dream and Governor General's
Award for The Wars, Findley won the 1985 CAA Award for Fiction for Not
Wanted on the Voyage (1984), Ontario's 1988 Trillium Book Award for
Stones (1988), the Mystery Writers of America's 1989 Edgar award for
best paperback original for The Telling of Lies (1986), the 1991 CAA
Award for Non-fiction for Inside Memory (1990), the 1994 CAA Award for
Drama and 1996 Floyd S. Chalmers Award for The Stillborn Lover (1993),
and the 2000 Governor General's Award for Drama for Elizabeth Rex
(2000). He was a member of the Order of Ontario (1991), an officer of
the Order of Canada (1986) and a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des
Lettres (France, 1996). His name was added to Canada's Walk of Fame in
2002. (by Vivian Zenari)

Irving
Findley's LETTERS Typescript
|
[Findley,
Timothy]. Findley, Irving. Letters of Irving Findlay DURING THE
GREAT WAR April 1st, 1915 - September 5th, 1918. Original typescript. One of perhaps four or five family copies of this inspirational and unpublished document written by Timothy Findley's uncle & godfather and genesis for Timothy Findley's novel, THE WARS, chronicling the war experiences of the men in Findley's family. Unpaginated. 250 pages. Typed on rectos only & bound in a 3 ring binder. About very good - the preliminary leaves showing some age, the binder well worn. [29727] $3750
Timothy Findley was named for his uncle and godfather Thomas Irving Findley who was known by his initials, TIF. Timothy Findley was named Timothy Irving Frederick Findley so he could be known as TIFF. His uncle died when TIFF was about 3 years old of
complication from wounds he received in the war. That war and his uncle's exploits in it were always the topics of family conversations in the Findley household. His letters home had been collected by his parents & bound up for posterity - everybody
in the
family read those letters. Given the place that the war had in Findley's family mythology, it was surprising to TIFF that he waited until halfway through his forties to write his acclaimed novel. As the center of family mythology, his uncles letters were the genesis for the work - "...they were my most valuable research resource". About his uncle, Findley said: " He was not a 'writer' - but he was a faithful correspondent and an equally faithful chronicler. What he wrote home ultimately gave me a better sense of life in the trenches - ultimately, in the air - than anything I could have found in the library." .

FAMOUS
LAST WORDS
Findley,
Timothy. FAMOUS LAST WORDS. Toronto: Viking, 1981. First Edition.
A very good or better copy in dustwrapper. 8vo., 396pp.
Extraordinary Family Copy signed on the title page & inscribed
by Findley to his father" For Father with much love / Tiff".
His father has decorated the front pastedown with a coloured
portrait of Queen Mary & has added a full page commentary
about the novel on the front fly: "...Tiff has written one
of the greatest pyrotechnic displays ever seen against the twilit
skies of English literature... / Dad". A wonderful copy
of this very highly regarded novel which explores the difference
between truth & lies, fact & fictions. [29729] $7500
"Like
its 1977 predecessor The Wars, Timothy Findley's 1981 Famous Last
Words ruthlessly examines the (often violent) nature of social
division and union, as well as the making of history. Together
these two novels mark the peak of Findley's career. While the slim
Wars focuses largely on a single Canadian soldier in the First
World War, Famous Last Words observes the next war--sometimes in
the wings, sometimes from a distant office--through expatriate
American writer Hugh Selwyn Mauberley. The title character in a
well-known poem by the infamous Ezra Pound ("born / In a half
savage country-- / Bent resolutely on wringing lilies from the
acorn"), Mauberley gives Findley a focus point for his
forceful moral questions. Can bad people produce good art? (Good
anything?) Are actions really excused by explanations? - Darryl

Galbraith
to Joey Smallwood
Galbraith, John Kenneth. THE AFFLUENT SOCIETY. Signed.. Boston:
Houghton Mifflin, 1958. Inscribed to Joey Smallwood. 8vo.
368 pp. First Edition, early impression, (14th), of this landmark work,
depicting a consumer culture gone wild, rich in goods but poor in the
social services that make for community. "One of those rare works
that forces a nation to re-examine its values" - The New York
Times, April 30, 2006, nicely Inscribed by John Kenneth Galbraith to
Premier Joey Smallwood of Newfoundland on the front free endpaper. 'For
the honourable J. R. Smallwood, with my warm regards, John Kenneth
Galbraith'.
|
'Then I had a long and close association with the most
notable figure in Newfoundland history and one vital in that of Canada
as well. That was Joseph Robert Smallwood. Joey Smallwood, one of the
most diversely alert and interesting political leaders of this century
and a central figure in the anniversary celebrations of these days. Joey
Smallwood was several times in touch with me in Cambridge called me here
to St. John's on one or two occasions for meetings, was one of the most
interesting (and I must say unpredictable) political figures of his
time. I now tell of something which until this moment is still unknown.
He once pressed me hard and seriously to return to the land of my birth
as head of this university. Under the arrangement that would be proposed
I would retain a part-time commitment to Harvard. Not without difficulty
I persuaded him that this would not be good for this university, would
be unacceptable at Harvard and possibly questionable for Galbraith. Had
I accepted, there would have been one certain and sad result: I would
not today be receiving an honorary degree. Excerpted from the
Convocation address by Dr. John Kenneth Galbraith at Memorial University
Of Newfoundland - 75th anniversary of the founding of Memorial
University College in 1925. (A long association well-documented). A near
fine copy in brick coloured cloth, black morocco - style label with gilt
titles to the spine, (some hand notations throughout), in a bright,
fresh dustwrapper with some minimal use. [26843] $875

Gary." A fine beautiful copy in brown paper covered boards, blue
titles to the spine in a fine pictorial dustwrapper. 8vo. Unpaginated.
48 pp. "This poem gives me an enormously visual picture of an
actual event; it conveys in very few words a character portrayal of
considerable power; and its universality means in my terms that is has
contemporary relevance. The Master of Horse is a man who has perceived
too much of the heart of conquest and who knows the darkness at its core
- I
consider Gary Geddes to be one of the best of the younger Canadian
poets." - Margaret Laurence $275.00

Charles
G. D. Roberts Discovers Archibald Lampman
"Long hours ago, while yet the morn was blithe, / Nor sharp a thirst had drunk the beaded dew, / A reaper came, and swung his cradled scythe / Around this stump, and, shearing slowly, drew / Far round among the clover, ripe for hay, / A circle clean and grey; / And here among the scented swathes that gleam, / Mixed with dead daisies, it is sweet to lie / And watch the grass and the few-clouded sky, Nor think but only dream." - Among the Timothy by

Archibald Lampman, FRSC [17 November 1861 – 10 February 1899] He is widely regarded as Canada's finest 19th century English language poet. Lampman's poetry concerns Canada's rural life and the wonders of nature and can be compared to British romantic and nature poetry contemporary to his life. Lampman's ability to write detailed, meaningful poems that depict traditional Canadian and Native American life was one of his greatest triumphs as a poet, and probably one of the reasons why his work has had lasting impact in the Canadian canon. Lampman associated with Charles G. D. Roberts, Susanna
Moodie, Catherine Parr Traill, Duncan Campbell Scott, & William Wilfred Campbell. He was one of the Confederation Poets and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1895.
Sir Charles George Douglas Roberts, KCMG , FRSC , BA [January 10, 1860 - November 26, 1943]. Canadian poet, prose writer, lecturer, professor of Literature & economics. First recipient of the Lorne Pierce medal. He was knighted in 1935. Previously, he had been awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University of New Brunswick. Besides his own body of work, Roberts is known as the "Father of Canadian Poetry" because he served as an inspiration for other writers of his time. Roberts, his cousin Bliss Carman, Archibald Lampman and Duncan Campbell Scott were known as the "Confederation poets".

Hugh MacLennan, CC, CQ (March 20, 1907,
Glace Bay, Nova Scotia – November 9, 1990). One of Canada's
greatest authors. He won five Governor General's Awards. He was
educated at Dalhousie University, & as a Rhodes Scholar at
Oxford before doing his doctoral studies at Princeton. In 1935,
he began teaching Latin and history at Montreal's Lower Canada
College. He married American writer Dorothy Duncan in 1936. In
1954, he taught English part-time at McGill University, and
became a full professor in 1968. He retired as a professor
emeritus in 1979 and lived in North Hatley, Quebec, until his
death in 1990. When MacLennan was 10 years old, he witnessed the
Halifax Explosion, which served as the inspiration for his first
novel, Barometer Rising (1941). This novel provided him with
national and international recognition as an author, and
MacLennan followed up on the success with Two Solitudes (1945),
which won the Governor-General's Award. The novel examines the
linguistic divide that existed in Quebec at the time. The title
of the novel has become the expression synonymous with the
bi-cultural nature of Canada. He won another GG award with the
novel The Precipice (1947) and two for non-fiction with the
collections of essays Cross-Country (1949) and Thirty and Three
(1954). After the death of his wife Dorothy, he published The
Watch that Ends the Night (1959), which some consider to be his
best novel, and won his record fifth GG award. He published a
third and final collection of essays in 1960, Scotchman's Return
and Other Essays. "MacLennan celebrated Canada with all of
its varying regions in all of his works, and represents one of
the first authors to do so with as much passion and
consistency" - Lee Skallerup

Henry
Moscovitch
Published at
the age of 15 under the tutelage of Irving Layton, Moscovitch was a prodigy.
His early poems a mixture of rebellion and charm. Later after graduating
McGill he won a Woodrow Wilson Scholarship to Columbia & there at the
height of the counter-culture revolution & much too much LSD, his
genetic predisposition to schizophrenia took hold & gradually ate his
life. Often he would call up friends to recite a poem he'd written before
destroying it. His friends would salvage what they could. A review of Mr.
Moscovitch's work was featured in a 1983 issue of Canadian Literature.
Critic George Woodcock wrote admiringly: "Reading Moscovitch's poems I
am reminded, by their form as well as their mood, of those modest fountains
in Japanese hermitages in which a thin, unbroken and oil-smooth jet of
waters falls into the mirror of an old stone basin."

MAGAZINE Complete With Original Art Inserts

|
Vol 1 No
1: November 1951,
with 3 original lino-cuts by Henry Webb. / Vol 1 No 2: December
- January [195102], with 5 original colour prints, one by Jack
Shadbolt / Vol 1 No 3: February [1952], with 2 original color
prints by Jack Shadbolt and an essay on his work by Maya
Fiamengo; a survey of new jazz by Al Neil; reviews by Dorothy
Livesay and Maya; a short story by E.G. Perrault; and a poem by
Phyllis Webb - The complete set of this essential west
coast exemplar of life in the arts.
PM Magazine. Vancouver. 1951. Issues 1-3 [all published].
Original printed wrappers. Edited by Yvonne Agzarian, George
Wright & John Brockington. Designed & printed by Robert
Reid whose genius it was to pull together the substantial
talents of budding local writers & graphic artists working
almost independently at the
Vancouver School of Art , which was part of the Vancouver
Vocational Institute on West Pender Street. The resultant
publications were compact explosions of creative energies. Among
the artists represented with original graphics are: In the first
issue, Harry Webb who designed three lino-cuts especially for
this issue. The coloured cut entailed a unique collaboration
between the artist and the printer. In the process the original
block was cut & printed three times & the only existing
copies are in the magazine. In the second issue: Five original
lino-cuts; one by C.J. Binning, & four others separately inserted mounted to a piece of glassine:
Madonna and Child by
Patricia Thomas, The Angel by Peter Cotton; Hooyah, the Raven by
Mollie Carter; & Seed Children by Jack Shadbolt. In the
final issue there are two original lino-cuts by Jack Shadbolt,
Forms for Spring, a large double fold-out, the other, untitled,
a single full page. They appear in an article devoted to his
work by Maya Fiamengo. Because the original art is easily
removed intentionally or otherwise, complete copies are rare. [29775 SOLD

The Canadian Authors Meet
Expansive puppets percolate self-unction
Beneath a portrait of the Prince of Wales.
Miss Crotchet's muse has somehow failed to function,
Yet she's a poetess. Beaming, she sails
From group to chattering group, with such a dear
Victorian saintliness, as is her fashion,
Greeting the other unknowns with a cheer -
Virgins of sixty who still write of passion.
The air is heavy with Canadian topics,
And Carman, Lampman, Roberts, Campbell, Scott,
Are measured for their faith and philanthropics,
Their zeal for God and King, their earnest thought.
The cakes are sweet, but sweeter is the feeling
That one is mixing with the literati;
It warms the old, and melts the most congealing.
Really, it is a most delightful party.
Shall we go round the mulberry bush, or shall
We gather at the river, or shall we
Appoint a Poet Laureate this fall,
Or shall we have another cup of tea?
O Canada, O Canada, O can
A day go by without new authors springing
To paint the native maple, and to plan
More ways to set the selfsame welkin ringing?

Giguère, Gilles Hénault and Paul-Marie Lapointe. Turnbull returned to
England where, in 1957, he founded Migrant Press, one of the pioneer
small presses in Britain. Turnbull's contribution to Canadian poetry was

A
Fine Set Of Gael Turnbull's Translations
 |
Turnbull (Gael) & Jean Beaupre.
Translators. A complete set of the four mimeographed publications translated by
Turnbull & Jean Beaupre in the summer of 1955, at Iroquois Falls, Ontario,
Summer 1955, for private distribution [Contact Press]. These four titles were
reportedly limited to only 25 copies each stapled into silk screened various
coloured wrappers. Once in awhile a title appears for sale usually showing
considerable wear as these were fragile things. The set offered here is
essentially in fine condition showing minimal use. An interesting project - the
whole idea of translating 4 Quebec poets in the '50's was of immense importance.
Included are: SIX POEMS BY PAUL-MARIE LAPOINTE, SEVEN POEMS BY GILLES
HENAULT,
NINE POEMS BY SAINT-DENYS-GARNEAU & EIGHT POEMS BY ROLAND GIGUERE. Very nice
indeed. [29791] $2950

"The
book is dedicated to older women and is addressed to young men"
Vizinczey, Stephen. IN PRAISE OF OLDER WOMEN. Toronto:
Contemporary Canada Press, 1965. 8vo., 244pp. First Edition. A fine copy in dustwrapper showing minimal use. Neatly inscribed on the front free end paper to the pioneering bookseller, owner of

V."

"The book is dedicated to older women and is addressed to young men" is the book's epigraph. Kildare Dobbs wrote in Saturday Night, "Here is this Hungarian rebel who in 1957 could scarcely speak a word of our language and who even today speaks it with an impenetrable accent and whose name moreover we can't pronounce, and he has the gall to place himself, with his first book and in his thirty-third year, among the masters of plain English prose..." Vizinczey, Stephen. IN PRAISE OF OLDER WOMEN: the amorous recollections of Andras
Vajda. London: Barrie & Rockliff, 1965. 8vo., 244pp. First UK Edition. A fine copy in dustwrapper showing a bit of light wear at the edges. Neatly inscribed on the front free end paper to the head of public relations for Penguin Books:
"To Anne Graham Bell / hoping she'll like it / Sincerly / Stephen
Vizinczey"
Made into a notable film in 1978 with Tom Berenger, Karen Black and Susan Strasberg. A subsequent Spanish production featured Faye Dunaway. A very nice copy. [On another interesting note, In 1968, Mrs. Graham-Bell, was an expert witness for the defense in the bizarre trial of Bill Butler, proprietor of the Unicorn Bookshop, brought up on charges of possessing obscene articles for commercial publication. Butler had published a booklet written by J. G. Ballard titled "Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan". The '60's we're transitional, the magistrates still stodgy & freedom of speech not a given. Butler found himself having to pay crippling fines plus legal costs.]
