/ The Great Auntie Of The Detective Novel
|
Turner, Bessie
A WOMAN IN THE CASE. New York: G. W. Carleton & Co., 1876.
Uncommon First Edition. Blind-stamped ribbed dark green cloth elaborately stamped in gilt at the spine. 8vo., 288pp. A near fine copy of this early detective novel. Anna Katherine Green's [1846-1935] THE LEAVENWORTH CASE, [1878]; is generally considered to be the first detective novel written by a woman & largely on the strength of that, Green is variously considered as either: Mother, Grandmother, Godmother of the Detective Story. A lesser known novel, THE DEAD LETTER by Seeley Regester [pseud. of Metta Victoria Victor] was actually published earlier, in 1867 - perhaps Seeley might be viewed as Great Grandmother - which brings us back to Bessie Turner. Published 8-years before the Green book, A WOMAN IN THE CASE, is not only the second earliest known detective novel written by a woman but also the first novel to contain the word Woman in the title. Quite historical. Turner [& Seeley] deserve more credit.

Emile.
THE WIDOW LEROUGE. Boston: Estes & Lauriat, 1873. This

Gaboriau's first detective novel, introduced a young police officer named Monsieur
Lecoq, who was the hero in three of Gaboriau's later detective novels. Monsieur Lecoq was based on a real-life thief turned police officer, Eugène François Vidocq (1775-1857), whose memoirs, Les Vrais Mémoires de Vidocq, mixed fiction and fact. It may also have been influenced by the villainous Monsieur
Lecoq, one of the main protagonists of Féval's Les Habits Noirs book series.
